Alpina D3

German tuners like AC Schnitzer and Brabus usually stuff big engines into small spaces to create ‘Bahn burners that are envied and feared. But a tuner like Alpina, who are actually classified as a manufacturer in Germany, say their philosophy is maximizing the potential of existing units. Their D3 Coupe is an E92 that features a smaller engine from the 123d. Alpina tuned the twin-turbo diesel to put out 214hp, a modest figure by today’s standards, but enough to produce a 0-62mph time of 6.9 seconds, top out at 152 and get an extraordinary 52.3mpg. While the D3 doesn’t qualify as a ‘Bahn burner, it does prove that enthusiasts don’t have to fret about a future of small, slow and boring cars.
