(David Maher at the helm of the Polizei M5 on the 2003 Gumball 3000. April 22nd, 2003.)
Master Pilot David Maher – banker, skier, hockey fan, car enthusiast and Ivy League-educated bon vivant of the American school – was Team Polizei‘s first co-pilot, having been the only interviewee to pass Alex Roy‘s draconian interview process prior to the 2003 Gumball 3000. Maher – a farm boy raised in Bedminster, New Jersey – began racing in his youth, graduating from tractors to karts and motorcycles before saving up for a car best left unpurchased by any sane man: A Porsche 930. Two years of accident and injury-free ownership came to a sad (but not – by his friends – unforseen) end, when, by the grace of the God that all 930 owners forsake upon purchase, he walked away from an accident in which his was mercifully destroyed.
Maher’s cold, persistent aggression behind the wheel rounded out Team Polizei’s 2003 Gumball 3000 original Pranck und Machinationen strategy, helping us win the vaunted Spirit of the Gumball Trophy on our first endeaor. Maher then returned to the Banc of America, purchased a 1996 Porsche 996 Turbo, and focused on SCCA Porsche Club events. Following the outcome of the April 2006 Record Run attempt, Roy contacted Maher in September of that year…and asked the fateful question.
And Maher’s answer was more compelling than Roy could have hoped.
