(Alex Roy & the original “Polizei” M5 in New Orleans – Gumball 2003)
The vaunted Team Polizei M5 Interceptor – code-named 144A – is arguably the most infamous BMW in the world. Veteran of four Gumball 3000 rallies, three U.S. Express 2006 runs (including the October 2006 record-shattering 31:04 cross-country run) and innumerable recon & testing miles, the Polizei M5 has, since its glorious inception in 2000, only seen 50,000 road miles in the 22 countries to which it has traveled.
Team Captain Alex Roy acquired the 2000 E39 from Wide World of Cars in Nanuet, NY in 2002, BMW’s Certified Pre-Owned Program having vetted the car which, in the two years since delivery to its original owner, had only accumulated 6,000 miles.
Within days, 144A was cut apart so as to accomodate Roy’s Brobdingnagian list of mechanical upgrades and aftermarket electronics, which has since grown to include an extraordinary suite of electronic countermeasures, navigation & safety equipment – available here.
