“Life Value and the Paradoxes of Risk”: A Brilliant Essay Everyone Should Read. And I Mean Everyone.

Everyone should read this. So brilliant…it speaks for itself….

An address by Charles S. Sanford, Jr.
Delivered at the Commencement Exercises of the University of Georgia
Sanford Stadium, Athens, Georgia

Thank you, President Knapp, members of the faculty, administration, the class of 1989, its family and friends.

President Knapp has drawn attention to the fact that much of my life and career have been involved with taking risks. It’s the sort of introduction which usually arches a few eyebrows. A person who takes risks for a living calls up the image of a riverboat gambler, someone who lives on the edge — in the chips today, down on his luck tomorrow.

From an early age, we are all conditioned by our families, our schools, and virtually every other shaping force in our society to avoid risk. To take risks is inadvisable; to play it safe is the counsel we are accustomed both to receiving and to passing on. In the conventional wisdom, risk is asymmetrical: it has only one side, the bad side. In my experience — and all I presume to offer you today is observations drawn on my own experience, which is hardly the wisdom of the ages — in my experience, this conventional view of risk is shortsighted and often simply mistaken.

Team Polizei Hearts MotoGP, MotoGP Fans AND All Our New Friends, However Misguided They Are About The Number of Contact Patches Modern Perambulation Requires. 2 x 2 = 4. We Loved You, Still Love You, and Hope You Still Love Us After Reading This…

It was Morley vs. Roy in Forza. It was many things. It was amazing. It was MotoGP @ Laguna Seca. And Team Polizei WILL return. Because I...WE...loved every minute among our 2-wheeled friends. And they enjoyed watching Morley crush Roy. Once. Just once.

Have you ever felt the like the best part of an epic wasn’t the actual driving, but the stories and friends made on the way?  That’s the feeling among all at Team Polizei after our first Moto GP weekend.

Danny Pedrosa gave The Doctor some bad medicine, but that was only 48 minutes of our far more grueling 76 hour deployment at Laguna Seca.  We made some great friends, including soldiers, police officers and myriad emergency personnel - native and foreign, active and retired - every one of them a fascinating and delightful new face we hope to see again…on the road preferably, for it’s those chance second meetings that only occur on the road - far from home - that make life worth living.

As for Roy…the Forza 2 king wwas dethroned and new champions were crowned. We ate too much pizza and didn’t get nearly enough sleep. Wearing a helmet and leathers on two wheels may be crazier than driving on four, but is anything crazier than us wearing some…er…newly de-classified helmets whilst droving 144B? Probably not. Except for El Jefe Liz Moses getting on TV again. Again. Or maybe Team Polizei’s Mystery Racing Theater 3000 commentary on the actual race.

About which Alex Roy knew nothing. And still knows nothing. He was too busy buying motocycle helmets to match his outfits, solely to use them as man purses. Yes. It’s true. He doesn’t even know how to ride. A bicycle…maybe.

Would we do a Moto GP weekend again?
Is the E39 M5 the best BMW made?

Thanks for all your support…we will be posting more news and picsin the next few days!

Team Polizei Racing Vs. You @ GoKartRacer - Burlingame, CA. Sunday, May 10th!

For Team Polizei 144’s Henri Richard, Rene Villeneuve & yours truly, this Sunday’s visit to GoKartRacer in Burlingame will be our last chance to get some valuable track time against friends & foes before our inaugural Grand Am race next week. Take us on this Sunday at one of the Bay Area’s most infamous indoor karting tracks…and the ice cream selection isn’t bad either. You’ll need it after facing off against Richard & Villeneuve.

As for myself, I’m looking for vengeance after several not-quite-unexpected defeats at K1 Speed Karting last night, and the Grand Prize for beating me Sunday is induction into our tech/pit crew for our May 17 race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

For anyone merely looking for fun - and to avoid being insulted on the PA system even if you beat me - just let me know in advance. I’ll sign books as well, but only if you bow down on one knee.

Other reasons to come out this Sunday?

1) Special 2-for-1 coupons given out to everyone for next weekend’s race.
2) Meet Richard & Villeneuve with their promise not to greet you with bone-crushing handshakes.
3) See Interceptor 144B in person, with guided tours from Alex Roy, rather than the usual impostor.

Details?

Sunday, May 10, 6PM-9PM

Alex Roy Addresses BMW. 144B Comes Along. Thank You, BMW.

Polizei 144B On Display Inside The MGM Grand Convention Center 4/28/2009

…and more than one of them is a fan of Grand Am

But first, of all the unlikely invitations I’ve received since Team Polizei’s 2003 inception, this one ranks right next to that from the (ahem) Food & Beverage Institute. BMW - divine creators of our beloved fleet of E39 Interceptors - having on an official level no more than winked at my six years of requests for some kind of support, finally said yes. Perhaps it was my recent statement about retiring from the rallies on which Polizei made its name, or positive reviews of the The Driver, or Geotegic’s work with Piaggio, or my speech at Google

Alex Roy Meets Those Who Made It All Possible...Whether They Knew It or Not.

I still don’t precisely know how or why BMW invited me to address their National Aftersales Conference in Las Vegas this past Tuesday, but three people must be thanked: 1) BMW’s Dan Creed, El Jefe of Aftersales, who must have had a BIG vote, and whom I never got to thank properly, 2) BMW exec Grant Paullo, who could not have been a more gracious host or gentleman, and 3) Mark Baltazar, President of Broadstreet, whose staff produced the event, and who clearly was rooting for me from the start. (Megan & Monica from Broadstreet..you rock. I’m sorry you’re both married.)

Now I’ve been to a lot of conventions and special events, but this was without a doubt one of the best I’ve ever seen. The tech staff behind my presentation numbered at least ten, my videos were edited, synced and projected on 3 colossal screens via HD projectors, and I’d never ever seen 32:07 footage that large and backed by a sound system better than any club I’d been to in Ibiza. Seriously.

G. Gordon Liddy Interviews Alex Roy. Yes. It’s True.

Thanks, Mr. G.

Some things are above politics, so there’s no point asking how this interview came to pass. The G. Gordon Liddy is a car and a bike guy, as in Lingenfelter-modified Corvette and Harley-Davidson. Full on. And he loves cross-country racing. The bad kind. And he loved “The Driver“. FYI, I’m shocked at how few of my friends under 30 know of G. Gordon Liddy’s historic significance.  If you’re too lazy to read the aforelinked, buy some old issues of Soldier of Fortune and you might see some of his older work. If that whets your appetite, there was this little historical event.

Most importantly, he had a cameo appearance on Airwolf.

Enough background…my host - a man with great taste in haircuts - was kind enough to have me on his Radio America show. The topic? Let’s just say it involved driving. Here’s the audio clip. My interview starts around 28:00 and change…

Wilkommen Auf Neue Team Polizei KartPiloten Bill Montana Fur Die Garage 419 Invitational!

Neue Polizei KartPiloten Bill Montana Im LuftPolizei Praktice  Neue Polizei KartPiloten Bill Montana Im LuftPolizei Praktice

Team Polizei is proud to announce a new addition to our vaunted list of Piloten: Bill Montana. Master of knowledge real-estaten, Garage 419 fan and - like J.F. Musial - a Polizei fan who jumped the fence to join the radical fringe of Germany’s finest, Herr Montana adds critical skills at a critical time:

Team Polizei’s entry in the Garage419 Invitational in support of the Children’s Tumor Foundation. More importantly, Herr Montana will join me as co-driver of Polizei 1, the fourth among our entry, Polizei 2 comprised of the vaunted David Johnson and the much feared Vinny Russo.

Read Montana’s personal introduction - entitled “I like to drive s**t fast” - after the jump…

VIDEO: Alex Roy @ Google - The Technology, Business Model & Secrets Behind A 21st Century Cannonball Run

Want to break the 31:04 cross country record? You’ll need an hour to watch this - my recent talk @ Google’s New York HQ, where for the first time in public I discuss and display Team Polizei’s heretofore totally secret 2-year plan for assaulting the 1983 32 hour 7 minute record. If you’ve been waiting to see our Herculean Google Earth map analysis of speed traps and the electronic countermeasure suite described in "The Driver", you might even love this as much as my new friends at the Food & Beverage Institute down in Quantico, Virginia…where I gave a private talk about details that still haven’t seen the light of day. (Never heard of the Institute? HINT: They love cars. And tech.)

Watch my FULL ONE HOUR Google talk AND check out the most shocking Polizei M5 sighting of all time…after the jump:

Rancho Santa Fe: Team Arbuckle 1st Again!

After a heated battle with Lamborghini pilot and Bullrun veteran Bill Wu, Team Arbuckle, in their lightly massaged 2004 BMW 330Ci, arrived first into the Rancho Santa Fe checkpoint with Wu right on their tail. Third was nailed by Ashley Van Dyke and Eric Ward, who took a different route from HRE Wheels shop (where Arbuckle also arrived first) in Vista to the palatial spread north of San Diego. Next stop? Qualcomm Stadium and then on to the Ivy Hotel in downtown SD.
