Alex Roy Addresses BMW. 144B Comes Along. Thank You, BMW.

Polizei 144B On Display Inside The MGM Grand Convention Center 4/28/2009

…and more than one of them is a fan of Grand Am

But first, of all the unlikely invitations I’ve received since Team Polizei’s 2003 inception, this one ranks right next to that from the (ahem) Food & Beverage Institute. BMW – divine creators of our beloved fleet of E39 Interceptors – having on an official level no more than winked at my six years of requests for some kind of support, finally said yes. Perhaps it was my recent statement about retiring from the rallies on which Polizei made its name, or positive reviews of the The Driver, or Geotegic’s work with Piaggio, or my speech at Google

Alex Roy Meets Those Who Made It All Possible...Whether They Knew It or Not.

I still don’t precisely know how or why BMW invited me to address their National Aftersales Conference in Las Vegas this past Tuesday, but three people must be thanked: 1) BMW’s Dan Creed, El Jefe of Aftersales, who must have had a BIG vote, and whom I never got to thank properly, 2) BMW exec Grant Paullo, who could not have been a more gracious host or gentleman, and 3) Mark Baltazar, President of Broadstreet, whose staff produced the event, and who clearly was rooting for me from the start. (Megan & Monica from Broadstreet..you rock. I’m sorry you’re both married.)

Now I’ve been to a lot of conventions and special events, but this was without a doubt one of the best I’ve ever seen. The tech staff behind my presentation numbered at least ten, my videos were edited, synced and projected on 3 colossal screens via HD projectors, and I’d never ever seen 32:07 footage that large and backed by a sound system better than any club I’d been to in Ibiza. Seriously.

Team Polizei & 144P In The Wall Street Journal!

Team Polizei in The Wall Street Journal?
That’s about as likely as Alex Roy launching a Grand Am team

INTERVIEW: Polizei 144 Racing Team Captain Rene Villeneuve

Villeneuve.

You know the name, even if you can’t place it.

I, however, am referring to Rene Villeneuve…the other Villeneuve, the Villeneuve you want to have drinks with, the Villeneuve who vaulted Polizei from the street to the track, the Villeneuve who – as Polizei 144 Racing Team Captain – will lead the Polizei/TRG Interceptor 144P into professional motorsport on May 17th at Laguna Seca.

Without Rene Villeneuve, Team Polizei would never had made the lap. I couldn’t be more proud to have him lead us, to have him as my instructor, and to have him as a friend. I’m not alone, because whereas Rene is Team Captain, our other driver – Ferrari Challenge veteran & new Polizei Master Pilot Henri Richard – has also been racing under Rene’s instruction.

And thus the team was born.

I first met Rene several years ago when I attended Skip Barber at Laguna Seca, but, with only Gumball stories to tell, didn’t think it fit I bring those up among proper race instructors, let alone the other students. We re-met through mutual friends last year, and once I recognized him I tried to strike up a conversation about endurance driving – an effort totally in vain -  until a passerby mentioned my team’s 31:04 record. Rene burst out laughing, and a friendship was born.

Last week I asked him some basic questions I hoped would convey who he really is…for Rene isn’t the attention-seeker I’m so often accused of being. Rene is one of many race drivers who remain humble in their acheivements, who teaches racing while raising his two daughters and – just like the rest of us – enjoys driving on the street.

So of course I asked about fear, street racing vs. pro racing, games, the Cannonball, Gumball, favorite cars and co-pilot selection. And Jaques. Read the full interview after the jump…

Team Polizei vs The REAL Polizei: From A Personal E-mail To The Polizei Banned Sale…

And here it is. The e-mail from the real Polizei – sent from a personal address in a cute font and color – that led to our Banned Sale last week.

Team Polizei Clothing Banned?

Obviously, I had to remove his information, but if you read the full message after the jump, I’d be grateful for any insights into his psychology. I have my theories, but first, let’s hear yours first.

Polizei Racing Update 1.1: Questions, Answers & Grand Am Interceptor 144P Design Reveal!

POLIZEI RACING HQ US EAST
1800hr EST

What car will Polizei deploy? Will it be Polizei-liveried? When can we see it? Who is actually driving? How did Polizei enjoin TRG‘s support? How did Polizei recruit Rene Villeneuve & Henri Richard? What does Roy know about pro motorsports? What’s up with the clothing line ban? Was it related to the racing announcement?

It’s been six days since the announcement of The Polizei Racing Project, and even we at HQ were amazed at the volume of feedback, support and questions. Among the ironies of moving the most infamous police-impersonating rally team into professional motorsports is that upon which we built our success: we’ve always been known for operating in great secrecy, this being the cornerstone of successfully executing the unexpected. Our mythology – and the expectations it inspires – have led to a mountain of questions we can only begin to answer now.

Below we reveal the first design sketches for Polizei 144P, and later today we’ll share the e-mail from the real Polizei that led to last week’s ban threat.

Tomorrow? Team Captain Rene Villeneuve‘s first interview since the launch of Polizei 144 Racing, followed by more of 144P, then Friday on it’s Master Pilot Henri Richard‘s unbelievable race report from this past Sunday’s Ferrari Challenge at Road Atlanta, and much more…

Team Polizei Enters Professional Motorsports, Launches Grand-Am Rolex Team. Behold! The Tentacled Glory of Polizei Interceptor 144P!

Team Polizei is entering professional motorsports.

Yes. Team Polizei is entering professional motorsports.

It’s utterly surreal. Even for me.

…yet on May 17th, Polizei Interceptor 144P will roll past the start line at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in the 2009 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series.

Making the jump from road rallies to the Grand Am Series – which includes the vaunted 24 Hours of Daytona – is one I deemed less even less likely than a successful attempt to break the Transcontinental Cannonball Record.

I thought both impossible – at least given my skills & experience – and yet, even after the record was broken, I never expected to race a race car on a race track, let alone show my face among proper race drivers, and yet I sought to prove that I knew as much about endurance racing as the 24 hour drivers, and that few of them were capable of breaking 31:04…at least not without a teammate like myself.

Then – in a chance meeting that almost made me believe in a higher power – I met veteran racer & Skip Barber instructor Rene Villeneuve. Not only did he praise my application of endurance racing strategies (which I learned from watching Le Mans) in breaking the NY-LA record, he also pointed out that I sucked at driving manual. Really. Then he began explaining the meaning of teamwork, about which I knew less than I’d thought.

Logically, I asked him to become Team Captain. He agreed, on the condition I become part of the team, which – on my rallies and cross country runs – had usually been some crazy bald man with some very patient friends…whereas with Rene running operations and teaching me to drive…
